It kinda blew my mind hearing someone say that OSRS is reductive to the MMO industry. It seems like a very uninformed thing to say with how OSRS is developed, and the interaction with the community being a driving force (for better and for worse) I feel like there are so too many things to list that show that OSRS isn't reductive but productive.

I love the idea that new content is built on nostalgia, that’s like saying retail WoW is built on nostalgia cause it’s still called “World of Warcraft”. New content for an old system doesn’t inherently tie the value of the content to that system. Almost nobody who plays League of Legends is nostalgic for Warcraft III even though that engine was the starting point for the whole MOBA genre. Frankly, any time you see games that are specifically nostalgic cash grabs, I’m thinking like Mighty No. 9 for Mega Man or Yooka-Laylee for Banjo-Kazooie, you see them dragged through the mud for being these lazy attempts at recreating something lost. If anything, success is a great indicator that nostalgia wasn’t the basis.

"we'll see" we've already seen classic wow falling off so fucking hard. I am way more nostalgic about wow than rs cause i never really played rs back in the day. And all I do now is play osrs. There is no reason nostalgia wouldn't work for wow if it was such a driving factor.

That’s exactly how RuneScape was born. Your chief argument against it is that it “looks outdated,” jimmy you are playing osrs, are you serious with this? I think maybe you have some attachment to osrs exclusively that transcends a logical analysis of its world and game mechanics. I hope brighter shores is good and see no reason it shouldn’t be.

Asmongold seems to disagree because there's a lot about OSRS he doesn't know. - Proof of this is his assumptions on the OSRS updates. - Proof of this is how he compares Brighter Shores to OSRS, because to him they're the same. - Proof of this is how he says everyone's just guessing because he is just guessing. He brings in a lot of his own WoW experience to this discussion which is VALID because he's been invited to discuss MMOs and this is the MMO he knows best. Unfortunately it leads him to make a lot of assumptions about OSRS that aren't true which leads to such a difference in their opinions. If Asmongold prefers his opinions on OSRS over the opinions of OSRS veterans like Jimmy, then I'm not sure if there's anything else that could have been said.

For example: I have massive nostalgia for Runescape Classic. I played the official Classic servers and... I just couldn't get into it. No updates. Just pure nostalgia. It wasn't a "better" version of the game. Couldn't play it long-term even though it has WAY more nostalgia for me than RS2 (OSRS).

I disagree with your point about casual wow players. You have to admit that it makes up 80%+ of the player base for really any popular game in general. What can differ is the day to day of what that casual player does, and how long they are subbed for. Not EVERY casual player is forced to join a guild, raid, or do high end mythic+ or pvp. Theres a lot of casual content in wow for people who choose not to take part in these less casual activities, and I think you ignored that in your point. You said something along the lines of "You can't log on for a bit here and there, and dilly dally..." As wow is a theme park mmo, theres lots of small things for the player to do. Lots of collecting and customizing, getting achievements, and minigames. Even things like raid finder allow players to take part in big story events without committing time every week to a guild and playing harder content. The fundamental aspects of what makes retail and classic differ may split opinions on topics like these, but generally I think that wow is better off with more small things to do. I completely agree that blizzard fails in this department in classic+ or season of discovery. People were expecting something new, not a seasonal dungeon/raid mixup that ignores what made vanilla great. Anyways great video, you make a great point about how nostalgia might get lots of people in the door initially. If people aren't given a reason to stay, they wont come back until the next hype "reset." I think that something like vanilla wow has a lot of nostalgia juice, but also a lot of potential to expand (classic+) and do great things like osrs does and actually maintain a consistent player base outside of big releases.

If it were for nostalgia, why aren't people doing 2007 content in 2007 gear then? Majority of the active playerbase are doing new content. You could still flyfish at barbarian village, and it would be a half-decent method. But nobody's gonna use an outdated method like that when they can go to temporos. Familiarity and preference to certain type of gameplay isn't nostalgia. I wouldn't had cared if they put out OSRS or RS4 with all the pre-eoc mechanics that i enjoyed in the game. If i want to play runescape, i want to play runescape, not any "wowified" mtx hell. And if on the other hand i wanted to play wow, i'd play wow, not a wow from wish type of deal

I really don't like where Asmondgold's channel has gone. His environment is its own echo chamber these days, everyone either agrees with him or they don't watch his content. So he's gained a lot of false confidence in areas he has no real insight into. Simply watching a video of highly condensed information doesn't really give you the ability to speak professionally to that element... but with so many followers it can easily become the prevailing uneducated opinion... which is frustrating to the rest of us. From a developer standpoint, Nastalgia was something the OSRS team was very aware of and leery about. They've worked very hard to be more than just 07scape and I think its insulting to the hard work that Jagex has put into new content to keep its players enjoying OSRS. Jagex has nurtured the trust of the community and as long as they keep true to that trust, they'll have people willing to sink hundreds to thousands of hours into the game.

they runed the game, so we all quit until they gave us the game back. call it nostalgia call it not nostalgia, but we had something we loved and it got changed overnight and progressively went down a rabbit hole of shit, until we got it back, then we started playing again, imo thats no different from quitting for 4 months and picking it back up.

Prolly think's its the biggest factor because that's how it is with Classic Wow, 1 to 1 remake- and how could anything else be different than 'his' game? Nostalgia could be the key but it can never be the fuel.

I do wish summoning was in old school. It was useful to me for Slayer/quests.

I enjoy OSRS so much. Nostalgia got me to log in the first time. But I wouldn't be playing it still if that was it. Cause back then I was Free to Play and made bread for like 50 hours. I got in the cooking guild and was able to make cakes. I sold them for cheap by the border to the wildy in Varrock cause I liked makin cakes. Now I feel like I'm really playing. I got members. And RUNELITE!! Runelite isn't nostalgia. That thing kept me going. <3

You literally highlighted Earthquake a minute before that in the video and it says "requires Two Hand Mace, One Hand Mace". This isn't really unique to POE. You cant use a bow with melee attacks in other games. I DO agree that melee attacks having weapon type requirements is unique but it does say it on the ability and some abilities don't really make sense with some weapon types. Shattering steel would not work with a club which makes sense.

'its still agility' truest true that ever trued, fuck agility. Also I played Runecape 3 all the way until 2019, before switching over to the sweet sweet taste of old school runescape. They are two different games, and I do not get Nostaliga playing OSRS as it feels 'new' enough to not. I do however get Nostalgia hearing sea shanty (in both games) thats nostalgia Asmon.

bro, the trailer for Bright Shores said it wasn't going to like OSRS. They announced it wasn't going to be grind based also. i can't see them being compared! Andrew wasn't even apart of OSRS anyway.

Maybe you both are right? That people could want to play it for nostalgia, but that it will not hold on for that long. After you have done whatever you wanted to do, maybe level up those skills and do those quests you didn't do when you were little. But after that you may feel finished. So to continue keep the players, you can keep putting out content for the old game, like OSRS have done. If I would've played osrs, one thing would be to try to do stuff for nostalgia. But also see all the new cool stuff and maybe play it for real

I've played osrs with multiple friends over the years, and there is no way in hell they would have started to play a game as dated (in terms of graphics, sound and visual effects) as osrs. It's mostly nostalgia because every 10-year old fucking sucked at runescape in 2007 and now you can feel like a total boss (that you would have been 17 years ago) with your whip and fire cape.

J1mmy, I don't think you're arguing your point well. I do think you're right, but your arguments still fit nostalgia. You should be talking about the reasons RS3 is simply bad. What you said basically boils down to "it's newer, it's what newer MMOs do, therefore bad". No, it's just the worst implementation of a combat system ever. It's like trying to fit a whole watermelon into a cheap blender with skin and all, forcing it until the container breaks, and all the while expecting the juice to taste good. Not to mention the constant popups in RS3 that beg you to pay to win... and some other crap.

I just wish, there was a WoWScape. A world of runescape immersed in WOW graphics. Keep runescape's skilling, loot, quest, bank, etc.. but with with a huge world where the cities are not stacked on top of each other. That would be the best game.

To take what Asmongold said "No game can go back and be the game you played in High School... I agree. OSRS is WAY better than it ever was in High School. I came back because of the new content and how it's changed. I wouldn't want to go back to 2007 OSRS in modern day, but what OSRS has become is what draws everyone that I know to it. I've played RS from 2003 times. By Asmon's logic I should be a diehard fan of OSRS. But no, I'm not. I enjoy RS3 way more than I'd OSRS. Nostalgia never made an impact for me. Only played for week when it was released and soon figured it wasn't for me. Went back to RS3 and haven't been happier.

I think a big reason why its not nostalgia. Is nothing happening when you played as a kid is happening now. Nobody plays castle wars. Nobody wears d med with dragon 2h (champion) Nobody scams by trimming armor Nobody spams glow2:wave:selling rune pl8 on world 2 Nobody trains on rock crabs or experiments Fire cape isnt the greatest achievement We have min/maxed everything out of the game. Same thing happened with classic wow. Is classic wow similar to when you played it as a kid knowing nothing about the game? No, now you know every zone and the perfect questing roadmap, perfect addons, what skills to actually train, best ways to farm gold, spell rotations, etc. Guides for every aspect of the game. The only thing nostalgic is the areas of the game. I do however think nostalgia brought people back initially. Including me. Wanting to go back and achieve/experience things i never did back in the day.
